SYMPOSIUM ON THE FIRST DECADE OF 'THE TROUBLES'
WHAT WE NOW KNOW, AND WHAT WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE ROLE OF SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE

Wednesday 12/Thursday 13/Friday 14 June 2019
University of Salford, MediaCityUK Campus
This is a chance for academics, specialists, journalists and participants from the UK and Ireland to come together to pool current knowledge, exchange views and assess the role and activities of the security and intelligence agencies during the first decade of 'The Troubles' in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Files have been released, official histories written, enquiries reported, investigations undertaken, programmes broadcast, and hundreds of books published. Much is now known about the early days, though there are still large gaps in our knowledge. Now is the time to make an assessment.
Over the three days (lunchtime Wednesday to lunchtime Friday), the aim is to give space and time for people to openly discuss a variety of topics covering the years up to 1976. A number of participants will present short outlines on different aspects of a topic which will then be opened up for a full discussion. Each session will be recorded and made available for a journal and podcast.
Attention will be paid to the activities of MI5, MI6, RUC Special Branch and Army Intelligence; Ireland (the Arms Crisis/Soar Eire/cross border relations and operations); Special Forces (SAS/SBS/MRF); Internment and counter-insurgency; Informers, interrogation and torture; Collusion, 'Dirty Tricks' and the Glenanne Gang; and Conflict Resolution and 'Back Channels'.
