On Friday 23 November “One Day, J.M. Synge…” conference will take place in Ankara, Turkey, at the Hacettepe University. The symposium is organized by the Hacettepe University Department of English Language and Literature and by the Embassy of Ireland in Turkey. The event is at its 8th edition and each year focuses on a different Irish writer. Previous conferences have covered the work of James Joyce, W. B. Yeats, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Seamus Heaney, George Bernard Shaw, and Augusta Gregory. This year, the work of J. M. Synge will be celebrated with speakers from Turkish universities and from abroad. Giulia Bruna, Research Associate at the University College Dublin Humanities Institute, will deliver the keynote address on Synge’s travel writing. Asalet Erten (Hacettepe Univ.) will discuss Synge’s translations in Turkish and Gülşen Sayın (Doğuş Univ.) will present on Synge in contemporary Irish drama. Papers will also offer new readings of Synge’s plays such as Riders to the Sea and Deirdre of the Sorrows. The full programme is attached.
