The Budapest Centre for Irish Studies (BCIS) comprises of Irish Studies programmes and courses at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPCU), Károly Gáspár University of the Reformed Church of Hungary, and János Kodolányi University of the Applied Sciences. All Universities are based in Budapest. Since its formation in 2013, the BCIS has supported the EFACIS Itinerary Programme, with visits to our Budapest University English Departments from poet Medbh McGuckian, and novelists Glenn Patterson and Deirdre Madden. In conjunction with the Irish Embassy, the BCIS has also supported annual Seamus Heaney Memorial lectures, organised by Prof. Győző Ferencz (ELTE), at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. These have been delivered by Medbh McGuckian, Prof. Paul Muldoon, and retired Prof. W.J. McCormack. The BCIS is also involved each June with the ‘Belated Bloomsday’ celebration in Budapest, organised by the Irish Embassy of Hungary. In 2016, the BCIS hosted 2 Symposia and 1 conference to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising. These included a visit from Prof Michael Laffan of UCD as Invited Speaker to the Károli Gáspár conference, ‘Rebels, Heroes and Terrorists: From Rising to Reconciliation’, and a delegation from the Keough-Naughton Institute of Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame IN, to the Pázmány University Symposium, ‘The Easter Rising and Central Europe’, including Prof. Christopher Fox and Prof Thomas Bartlett. In November 2015, the BCIS supported the W.B. Yeats Commemoration Symposium organised by Dr. Eglantina Remport, at the Institute of English and American Studies, ELTE, with Prof Anthony Roche, UCD, as Invited Speaker. In June 2014, the BCIS supported the Irish Studies Conference, ‘Silence … and Irish Writing’ organised by Dr. Michael McAteer at the Institute of English and American Studies, PPCU, with Prof Emer Nolan (NUI Maynooth) and Dr. Emilie Morin (University of York) as Keynote Speakers.
