Call for Contributions
The Dublin Gate Theatre: Cultural Convergences
Edited by Ondřej Pilný, Ruud van den Beuken and Ian R. Walsh
Contributions are sought for a collective monograph that is to be the final outcome of the Gate Theatre Research Network project, funded jointly by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Radboud University Nijmegen, the National University of Ireland, Galway, and Charles University, Prague.
The main objectives of the volume are to address the existing lacunae in scholarly research dedicated to the Gate Theatre, Dublin, and to produce a comparative study of the Gate’s activities past and present. Proposals for book chapters are particularly welcome in the following areas: comparisons of the Gate’s work with European theatres with a similar focus and remit, comparative studies of the productions of international drama (e.g. German, British, American, Russian or Czech) at the Gate and in their original contexts, the Gate and Irish-language theatre, and the stage, costume, lighting and music design at the Gate examined in an international context.
Proposals are also welcome for work on other neglected areas such as the influence of cinema and television on the work of the theatre (including its repertoire and its promotion), the Gate’s magazine Motley, the writings on theatre of its original artistic directors Micheal macLíammóir and Hilton Edwards, and neglected figures associated with the Gate, such as its co-founders Madame Desirée Bannard Cogley and the actor and Irish-language playwright Gearóid Ó Lochlainn, prominent women playwrights (including Maura Laverty, Hazel Ellis, Christine Longford, Mary Manning or Dorothy Macardle), the playwright and director Denis Johnston, celebrated actors associated with the Gate (from Orson Welles, James Mason, Shelagh Richards and Ria Mooney up to the present day), and last but certainly not least, the current artistic director of the Gate, Selina Cartmell.
The book is expected to appear from an established international publisher in 2020.
Abstracts of proposed contributions (200-300 words) should be sent to Ondřej Pilný at firstname.lastname@example.org by 30 April 2019. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by the end of May 2019. Completed book chapters of 4 000 – 6 000 words will be due by 31 October 2019. Membership in the Gate Theatre Research Network is not a precondition of acceptance.
